  • Priced To Sell – Here’s a Private Island For Just R25 Million

Yes, that is South African Rands. Now anyone who has taken a cursory look at the FT Weekend‘s property section will be well aware of how inexpensive that price tag really is. You know, in REAL terms.

Look, at 2,6 acres, it’s not a monster, but I reckon 30% of the reason we want to own islands in the first place, is simply to own it.

SURE, we all want to ‘escape’ sometimes, but at the end of the day, when people hear that you own an island, they don’t ask how often you visit it, or what size it is to ascertain whether or not it ‘counts.’ They simply sit in silence and digest the fact that you own an island and they don’t.

So here it is – St. Athanasios Island, off Greece, in the Mediteranean – just around the corner from Corfu. I popped into Corfu during our honeymoon cruise, actually. Stunning.

    According to Vladi Private Islands:

The beautiful island of St. Athanasios lies in the Gulf of Corinth, 1.5 miles from the city of Itea and a short distance from Delphi, the skiing resort of Parnassos and the historic port of Galaxidi. The vegetation on this small, private island of 10,811 m2 includes some pine and olive trees and there is a small sandy beach along the northwestern coast. The surroundings are natural and quiet and the seawater lapping the shores is crystal-clear and rich in sea life. The island has an unencumbered, full and unrestricted freehold title, as well as indispensable supporting documents from various public authorities.

It is an ideal place, offering calm and unique natural living conditions that could be combined with a modern and comfortable residence. St. Athanasios is suitable for the development of a private villa, cottage or permanent residence.

St. Athanasios Island is free of Natura 2000 area restriction. The Island is one of the few, if not the only private island in Greece.

Very nice and all – but if you dig a little deeper, you notice that you’re not totally isolated. See here:

Ok, I get it. So there’s a compromise here. You’re getting less space and less ‘privacy’ (it’s not just ocean you’re looking at) in return for easy commuting to a mainland. Which means quick access to supplies and less expense and transport when building your off-the-grid pad.

Hmmm… it’s tricky. But look, at 25 bar, you could have a lot of fun. What does R25 million buy you these days, anyway?

Please man – do me a favour.

You can’t even get this pad in Higgovale.

    It’s actually quite impressive.

    Here’s another shot:

You need to actually see the other shots. Check the listing out here, it’s going for R36 million.

    So back to the island…

Look, I guess it depends on how much loot you’ve got. Up until this point I’ve been talking about me and you. You know, the man on the street.

If we we’re talking about ‘in a few years time’ then SURE, let’s extend our horizons.

    Something like this, perhaps?

Yes, that’s an airstrip. Not just an airstrip, but two runways. Just in case there’s a crosswind.

    Imagine that.

Flying in to your pad. In your own jet. Nothing too fancy. Maybe the world’s only single engine ‘personal jet’, the Cirrus Vision Jet? With its own built-in parachute, so nobody has to panic.

    Fine!

And at $2 million, it’s actually extremely reasonable. You can even buy one in South Africa here.

Ja, so back to that island at the beginning. R25 million is perfectly acceptable. And you know what – after building Cabine du Cap, which is also off-the-grid, TRUST ME, you’ll be thankful you’re near the mainland. Cabine du Cap is just 10 minutes outside of Montagu and that is plenty.

I’m not sure how much cash you have on you RIGHT NOW, but tonight’s EuroMillions is sitting on EUR 73 million, and this weekend’s US Powerball and Megamillions are sitting on EUR 126 million and EUR 101 million, respectively. That will take care of all of the above.

Literally every property and toy I’ve mentioned above will be yours. And you’ll have change to give to a charity. So buy your tickets online, right now, here.

And if you really think you’re starting to understand the universe, make sure you also do Bob Skinstad’s new 80:20 mindset online course. At least you’ll be giving yourself half a chance of great success.
