If you haven’t yet seen or heard a drone flying overhead this year, then I’m pretty sure you’re not getting out of the house often enough. They must have been popular Christmas prezzies, but have you ever thought about getting a little drone side-hustle going on?

You’re probably thinking that it takes years to master the game, but there are short courses out there that will set you on your way.

DRA offer a five-hour course, consisting of theory, simulator and practical modules, and you’ll find plenty of similar options becoming more popular here in South Africa.

You only have to look at weFix ambassadors like Luke Maximo Bell and Naude Heunis to see what potential you have in the palm of your hand when you own a drone.

Luke’s YouTube video titled ‘The Most Beautiful City on Earth’, which boasts more than 300 000 views, still sends shivers down our spine:

Yeah, that will do just fine. If you live in Cape Town and that didn’t make you puff your chest out then I guess we can’t help you.

So how do you start off a budding career in drone photography or drone videography? Well, not to play the role of Captain Obvious, but you’ll want a drone of your own.

weFix lead the way when it comes to finding something that suits your price point, and there are a few drones you might be familiar with.

If you’re hunting in the under R10 000 region, you should start with the DJI Spark. This gem is a mini drone that features all of DJI’s signature technologies, allowing you to seize the moment whenever you feel inspired.

Available in Alpine White, Lava Red and Sky Blue, you can enjoy all the functionality that sets the DJI range apart from the rest without breaking the bank.

You’d be getting in ahead of the game with the next one, but what would you say if you heard you could snap up a drone for a cool R1 999?

Sounds too good to be true, but then you haven’t seen the Ryze Tech Tello Drone. Ryze Tech, powered by DJI, set out to build the most fun drone ever, and came up with Tello: an impressive little drone that’s a blast to fly, and helps users learn about drones with coding education.

That one is only available on pre-order for now, and will be available at the beginning of April, so if you need to stuff some money in the sock draw to snap it up then consider yourself forewarned.

The bottom line is that making money from your drone skills isn’t something that’s out of reach. Whether it’s photos you take, videos you make or something in between, maybe it’s time to start looking at how you can make your favourite toy work for you.

Go on, have a look around what weFix has to offer and (incoming Dad Joke) the sky really is the limit.
