    With a range of categories covering pretty much every aspect of photographic subjects, the Societies of Photographers has announced the winners of their 2017 Photographer of the Year Awards.

    Taken from a selection of 8 500 pictures, the winning images are finalised into 26 categories. Some of the finest entries include everything from refugees in Mediterranean to swooping owls and raging bulls, reports The Telegraph.

    Before we look at some of the best photographs, the above image is from Kuttub Uddin, who won the Macro and Close Up category with the picture of a Malaysian soldier ant.

    Terry Donnelly came in second in the Sports category, with this graphic bike crash during a race in Cheshire, UK:

    Terry Donnelly also won the Nature segment, with this photo of a barn owl scouting a field for prey:

    Lenny Smith won the Wildlife category, with this picture of a pine marten with a mouse taken in the Cairngorms National Park:

    This futuristic model was runner-up in the Advertising and Commercial category, taken by American Erich Caparas:

    Placing third in the Media and Documentary category was Darrin Zammit Lupi’s striking picture of capsized migrants reaching out for help in the Mediterranean:

    Chan Onn Fong came first in the Landscape category, with this photo of a fisherman’s hut in the Malacca Straits:

    Bjorn Stuedal came second in the Monochrome section, with his photo of a golden eagle taken in Dalen, Norway:

    Kitty Cohen won the Travel category, with this shot of St Patrick Cathedral from the 32nd floor of a New York hotel:

    Ross Grieve came second in the Media and Documentary section, with his picture of a Muslim man walking near Brick Lane in London’s east end:

    A picture of a bull flinging a man into the sea in Denia in southern Spain won Jaime Mezquaida second place in the Events category:

    Some fine work on display, but I have definitely seen better.
