If you’ve ever wondered how to effectively commemorate South Africa’s Human Rights Day, you need to take a look at what the Apartheid Museum did.

The initiative, in partnership with Joe Public United, saw over 8 000 “bills” placed at selected restaurants across Johannesburg, including Hell’s Kitchen, Rockets, The Whippet, Corner Café, The Lonely Hearts Club, Coobs, The Republic of 94, Greenside Café and Simply Asia.

On the “bill” was a list of many of the lives that were affected during the struggle against the apartheid regime, in order to “remind South African of the real cost of its freedom and bill of rights,” reports HuffPost:

Along with their food and drinks bills, customers visiting the restaurants will be presented with the itemised bill of lives lost, people displaced, and those sent to prison.

The bill also doubles up as an entry ticket to the museum between Human Rights Day and Freedom Day in April.

And, as deserved, many applauded the effort:

Kudos to the creative who came up with this.

You can see more of the public’s reaction on the #BillOfRightsZA hashtag.
