  • Common Air-Travel Myths Debunked

Scared of flying? Find yourself Googling the danger of aircraft, turbulence and crash landing statistics before every flight? Even if your biggest fear is being ripped off by extortionate ticket prices, cruising at 30 000 feet in the air is daunting. Here are some common flight myths debunked.

Economy is actually the best seat to be in

You may want more leg room and fancier food, but premium aircraft classes aren’t all they are cracked up to be. Recent studies into aeroplane crashes show that economy class is the place to be. According to research, those at the back of the plane are the safest in the event of a crash or emergency.

Other safer positions include sitting above the wing, where the structure of the plane is the strongest. So next time you’re feeling down about your economy ticket, rest assured that you’re making the safest decision.

Cabin air is unlikely to make you sick

There’s a common myth we’ve all heard, which is that cabin air can make you sick. Whether it’s fumes from the engine being fed back into the air-conditioning, or recirculated air spreading disease and illness, plane air has often been the blame for a lot of air travel discomfort. However, recent research and surveying amongst experienced pilots suggests that cabin air is, in fact, extremely clean.

It is even believed that cabin air is safer and cleaner than most daycare centres. Only 10-50% of the air is recirculated, which is filtered before being pumped back out.

Almost anyone can land a plane

It’s true that most passengers cannot comprehend how a plane works – it may seem like a mystery. However, recent research is investigating this, as it is believed that almost anyone can land a plane if they get enough help from air traffic control. Planes can be set to auto-land, and so the biggest task for any amateur pilot would be communicating with the airport to ensure they have permission to land and an appropriate landing spot. Simple, right?

You are always paying too much

Recent publications have exposed the most expensive month and destination to fly to. Vegas is consistently one of the most costly places to travel. If you’re not willing to spend all your cash on a trip to the desert strip, there’s always online casinos, such as Vegas Casino, that give you all the games and thrills, at no extra cost. So, you don’t have to say no to roulette, blackjack or video poker just because you can’t afford that trip.

It’s believed that no matter where or when we travel, plane tickets are always marginally too expensive during the summer months. And so, winter travel may be a better option.

It’s impossible to open an aircraft door

You may be a nervous flyer, or the kind of passenger that contemplates the aeroplane door being wrenched open mid-flight. This is impossible. Cabin pressure will not allow it. At a typical cruising height, the doors have at least 80 pounds of pressure pushing up against them, and so you’d have to be extremely strong to open them.

If this doesn’t make you feel better about air travel, remember, it’s the safest and quickest way to travel. Otherwise, maybe consider a cruise next time.
