If you’re a frequent first-class traveller, you might know how Singapore Airlines do the most to offer high-quality service that us plebs wish we could see while flying SAA.
Now the airline has taken top honours at the annual World Airline Awards, which is basically the aviation industry’s equivalent of the Oscars.
Beating out the likes of Qatar Airways and Japan’s All Nippon Airways, Singapore Airlines officially rules the skies, thanks to its uber cool features, service quality and much, much more.
Come and take a gander inside your typical Singapore Airline aircraft, with details from The Telegraph:
First class is the shiz, plain and simple:
Singapore Airlines is reputed to have the finest first class offering in the world. That’s the verdict of the World Airline Awards, which not only named it best overall, but handed it the World’s Best First Class and Best First Class Seat awards.
The word “seat” doesn’t really do them justice – they are rooms, measuring 50 square feet [4,6 square metres] apiece (up from the previous offering of 30), and contain both a leather chair, separate bed and large wardrobe … As for in-flight entertainment, the 32-inch [81 centimetres] HD screen should suffice.
There’s a credenza (because “sideboard” just doesn’t sound luxurious enough), with even more storage space.
That’s great, especially if you need somewhere to park your Louis Vuitton handbag.
You’ve practically got your own bathroom, with a few perks thrown in:
Other luxury touches come from the French firm Lalique, which provides amenity kits, pyjamas, slippers, eyeshades and socks – as well the crystal glassware that is used alongside Wedgwood crockery during meals service.
However, these cabins are reserved for the cream of the crop, with the cash to burn.
You might get lucky when looking through the leading flight comparison sites, with some airfares costing less than booking through the airlines themselves, but there’s no shame in downsizing.
This is what a standard first class cabin looks like:
Its standard first class is more modest (seats are 35 inches [89 centimetre] wide and transform into a 81-inch [205 centimetre] flat bed, while screens measure 23 inches [58 centimetres]).
A little bit of a step-down from the luxury we just saw, but I’m sure you’ll survive quite nicely in these ordinary cabins.
Here’s what you’re getting for your buck if you’ve booked yourself a seat in Business class:
Singapore Airlines was handed the “Best Business Class in Asia” award. On its new A380s, seats recline into flat beds and couples can fuse their seats to create a shared double.
Screens measure 18 inches [46 centimetres]. According to the website Seatguru, business-class seat width ranges from 30 to 34 inches [76-86 centimetres] on its A380 (but goes as low as 20 inches [51 centimetres] on some 777s) … Entertainment screens are far smaller, too.
Ah well, at least you’ve got yourself a sweet bed to sleep in, right?
As for Economy class, and wherever you’re going in the world, it’s a no go on the bed front:
It’s a familiar sight that you’ll see on any plane, but at least you’re still guaranteed entertainment thanks to the video screens.
Now that we’ve covered the seating arrangements, let’s move onto a very important element of flying – the food:
This here’s a prawn and chicken laksa, served on Wedgewood china. It’s the type of flavoursome fare you can expect in first-class:
Of course the economy class offerings are far less luxurious, but Singapore Airline is clearly doing its best to make plane food more appetising for all its passengers. It has a panel of “international culinary experts”, including Italian chef Carlo Cracco and US maestro Alfred Portale, and claims to test all its meals in a simulated pressurised cabin to ensure it tastes just as good at 30 000 feet.
Premium passengers on selected routes can also take advantage of its “Book the Cook” initiative. It means that, so long as you order up to 24 hours before your flight, you can choose from a wider range of main courses.
Finally convinced that this is the best airline in the world? Welcome to the club.
