Local Startup Dropping R10 000 From Rooftop On UCT Campus Today [Video]

Whilst the exact details will only be released 10 minutes before the drop takes place, we know that DigsConnect are throwing R10 000 from a roof on UCT's Upper Campus.

I guess this is a lesson for all startups – if you throw money off a building, people will take notice.

That’s exactly what Cape Town-based student rental startup DigsConnect plan to do at 12:55PM today, dropping R10 000 in R10 notes off a rooftop.

As it stands, the building from where the money will be dropped remains unclear, but here’s what we know via Business Insider:

DigsConnect, which achieved 2,000 listings in less than a year, wanted to do something “crazy” to say thank-you to its clients, co-founder Greg Keal [pictured above] told Business Insider South Africa.

“We would have made no progress without the incredible support of UCT landlords and students,” Keal says. “And people are tired of boring radio ads and billboards.”

…DigsConnect, which describes itself as “the Airbnb of student accommodation”, already distributed R1,000 and R2,000 in R10 notes on Tuesday and Wednesday in a build-up to the big R10,000 drop on Thursday.

Keal let slip that today’s drop-off will take place somewhere on Upper Campus, and the “location will be announced 10 minutes beforehand on @uctjustkidding’s Instagram page, and DigsConnect’s Instagram and Facebook pages”.

Considering the scenes that went down when they did their previous drop-offs, expect mayhem:

I mean, it’s cool that people are getting free cash, but there’s something about watching the scramble for money that feels a touch gross.

Anyway, more about DigsConnect:

Keal co-founded DigsConnect with Alexandria Procter in 2017. The duo, both aged 23, met while serving on UCT’s student council.

“Alexandria was being inundated with requests for accommodation as the day students coordinator on the SRC,” Keal says.

“We knew that there had to be a better way. So we created a platform that allows students to find every type of accommodation offered in one central place.”

Keal hopes the marketing campaign will push up unique browsers and listings on DigsConnect’s website.

For now, we’re just keen to see the scenes that unfold when that cash is dropped from the roof. Expect drama.
