It’s almost that time of year again when we celebrate everything that makes South Africa great.

Yep, Heritage Day is nearly upon us.

On September 24, South Africans reflect on our diverse cultures, beliefs and traditions. Before 1995, the day was originally called ‘Shaka Day’ in commemoration of the legendary Zulu King Shaka, who was instrumental in forming the Zulu nation.

In 2005, Heritage Day also became synonymous with braais, and Braai Day was born. At the end of 2007, the Braai4Heritage initiative was awarded an endorsement by South Africa’s National Heritage Council for bringing South Africans together.

Right – that was the history lesson, now you’re armed and ready to take on Heritage Day like a pro. How? By combining some culture and some braai time to nail the perfect day.

    First, culture:

Start your Heritage Day with free entry to one of the following Cape Town museums:

    • South African Museum
    • South African National Gallery
    • Slave Lodge
    • Bo-Kaap Museum
    • Koopmans-De Wet House
    • Maritime Centre
    • Rust & Vreugd

You can also visit the Zeitz MOCAA (above) for free from 10AM to 6PM.

We’d recommend that you get there early, because part two of the most epic day ever involves using all that new-found knowledge about our history and culture to impress your friends at a braai.

I know I don’t need to tell you how to organise a braai, but braai etiquette remains foreign to some. This is an oldie but a goldie, and makes some valid points:

Another way to avoid being a doos at a braai is to make sure that you don’t show up empty-handed. Now, I know you’re wondering where you’re going to find the time to get booze and snacks in between the museum hopping, but don’t stress – we’ve got you covered.

Quench is a superb alcohol delivery app that helps you order alcohol and have it delivered straight to your door with a few taps on the screen.

You just know that Heritage Day at the shops is going to be a gemors, finding parking will cause a spark in your blood pressure, and the queue at the liquor store will turn nasty.

Somebody is going to ask to talk to the manager, It’s going to be one of those days.

Stop it – you deserve better.

On Quench, you can choose from a range of beer, wine, spirits and more, including soft drinks, snacks and other products, then make payment directly through the app.

Even better – delivery is free on your first purchase and the first 1 000 people to use the promo code QUENCH50 will get an additional R50 off their order.

Be sure to tell everybody who is sharing war stories about their trip to the shops that you’re better than them.

What are you waiting for? Download the app, mark September 24 on your calendar and start planning.
