Casino gambling, whether brick and mortar based or online, is arguably one of the leading industries with the worst reputation in the eyes of Joe and Joanne Public. This is hardly surprising considering the amount of negative press and stereotyping that surrounds the industry. Casinos have long been portrayed as dens of iniquity and evil, not only within various religious circles, but also through countless novels, plays, movies and TV shows over the years.
To the uninitiated, casinos seem to be nothing but a place to go and throw your money away. To the experienced that have actually been burned by one or another unfortunate casino-related incident, casinos are nothing more than a charade designed to drain you of every last penny. It’s really not all that surprising then to learn that casinos, both real and virtual, have been stepping up their game as far as showing the greater public just how socially responsible they are (or are becoming).
There are various tools that casinos use to put a more positive spin on their image in an effort to win the hearts and minds of potential casino customers. Of course, nothing says ‘social responsibility’ like donating a portion of your revenue to one or more worthy charities.
Casino Social Responsibility – Looking After Communities
When it comes to brick and mortar casinos, which many players regard as the real thing, and online casinos as the compromise when you can’t get to a brick and mortar casino, it really doesn’t get much bigger than Harrah’s.
While you may not have heard of that name, you most probably have heard the name ‘Caesar’s Entertainment’ before, as in the famous Las Vegas casino featured in the movie Hangover. In 2005, Harrah’s Group purchased Caesar’s Entertainment, making them the largest casino entertainment (gambling) company in the world. Harrah’s employ well over 100,000 people and produce over $8 billion in revenue annually.
Aside from their achievements within the casino industry, Harrah’s is also well-known for their community charity work through the Harrah’s Foundation, which is usually delivered in grants and focused on the communities in which their casinos are located. While their main casinos are located in Nevada, New Jersey, DC, Louisiana and Illinois, smaller casinos as well as proposed casinos are often found in predominantly African American communities including Biloxi, Tupelo, East St. Louis, Gary and Tunica. This is probably why the majority of the grants given by Harrah’s Foundation focus on key areas including youth development, health, elderly care and diversity.
Harrah’s Foundation has also made substantial grants towards education and development, the University of Nevada being one of their main beneficiaries. The foundation also played a key role during Hurricane Katrina disaster relief efforts, setting up disaster relief programs for many casino workers and their families within the greater Mississippi Delta area. As is the practice with most responsible casino operators, Harrah’s donates substantially to the American Gaming Association as well as to the National Center for Responsible Gaming. These organizations are responsible for significant research related to various gambling-related disorders and addictions.
Responsible Gambling – Looking After Players
With more and more internet users finding quick and easy access to gambling online, virtually at any time of the day or night, seven days a week and throughout the year, responsible gambling has become a hot issue. Before the advent of the internet, anyone that wanted to do a bit of gambling would have to find the nearest brick and mortar casino. If you were lucky enough to be living in a state, province or county that actually had casinos, it wasn’t too bad. However, if you happened to live in an area where there were none, you would have to do quite a bit more planning and budgeting if you were really determined to spend some time in a casino.
The internet has made many things easy and instantly available including casino gambling. Now, virtually anyone in the world with a decent enough internet connection can simply log in or sign up and be gambling literally within a few minutes. Mobile online casino gaming has taken the convenience even further, allowing hardcore gamblers and casual players alike, the opportunity to play wherever and whenever they choose to.
Adding to this is the fact that more and more online casinos have become available over the past decade. Setting up an online casino is a lot easier and a lot cheaper than it is to set up a brick and mortar establishment of the same equivalent. Players are spoilt for choice but this also means that the dangers of being fleeced by an unscrupulous online casino, or becoming addicted to the always on and readily available casino are higher than ever.
Top online casinos understand that it is critically important that they be seen to implement proactive and decisive measures to ensure player safety at all times. This goes beyond the sophisticated encryption algorithms and random number generators, and includes a great deal of responsible gambling information, along with actual onsite resources that players can use to prevent gambling addictions and overspending.
William Hill, one of the largest online casino and sports betting websites in the world, have donated well in excess of £1,000,000 to key organizations such as the Responsible Gambling Trust (RGT) among other charities and social resource groups.
Mr. Green, a leading Scandinavian-based online casino that focuses in Canada and sportsbook is arguably at the forefront of using cutting-edge technology to ensure that their players stay safe in every sense. The brand’s unique approach, dubbed ‘Green Gaming’ has garnered them a number of industry accolades including a 2017 SBC Socially Responsible Operator of the Year award, GGA Corporate Responsibility Provider of the Year 2018, and the 2018 IGA Social Responsible Operator of the Year award.
Green Gaming consists of a predictive tool that can analyze a customer’s performance to try and curb any potentially detrimental playing styles or bad habits from forming. This then allows every player to be in control of their gaming by setting their deposit limits, loss limits, wagering limits and promotional offerings from the casino.
As more and more casinos, both real world and virtual, follow these examples, a more positive and rewarding gaming experience and environment becomes possible, putting the industry above old clichés and bad reputations and creating a more rewarding gambling experience across the spectrum.
