Nobody likes conceding an injury-time equaliser, but that’s especially true for Jose Mourinho, who took his Manchester United side to Stamford Bridge, where he has previously won three league titles.
Leading 2-1, and in the sixth and final minute of time added on, United switched off and Ross Barkley blasted home to maintain Chelsea’s unbeaten start to the league.
During his celebration, Chelsea assistant coach Marco Ianni rubbed Mourinho the wrong way, causing the Portuguese to spring off his seat.
The fracas then spiralled into the tunnel, where stewards intervened, with both benches involved in a number of heated exchanges.
To start, here are the match highlights:
Dubious music aside, here’s some footage of what sparked the confrontation between Ianni and Mourinho:
After the dust settled, both managers were surprisingly magnanimous, with this from the Guardian:
[Chelsea manager Maurizio] Sarri was quick to accept the blame and criticise Ianni’s actions. Mourinho, who accused Chelsea’s fans of disrespecting him, also attempted to draw a line under the matter despite saying that Ianni’s actions were down to a “bad education”.
Here’s Sarri at the post-match admitting his team were in the wrong:
Marco Ianni will be dealt with by Sarri himself, via internal disciplinary action, with the English FA awaiting referee Mike Dean’s report before deciding whether they’ll take any action against the parties involved.
Never a dull day in the Premier League, right?
