Two people, a man and a woman, are recovering in hospital after a broad daylight shooting on the Jan Smuts offramp of the M1 north highway in Johannesburg on Monday.

One of the victims, both of whom are in critical condition, has been identified as a member of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), also known as the Hawks, who are now investigating the shooting.

While the motive of the shooting is still unknown, an eyewitness, who spoke to News24, said the suspects opened the boot of the vehicle they had shot at and removed what looked like a bag. They then fled the scene.

The shooting was captured by a commuter. Warning – the video contains visuals that sensitive viewers might find disturbing:

Gauteng Hawks spokesperson Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu said that the man was not on duty at the time of the shooting. He and a passenger were travelling in a BMW X1 along the M1 highway when the incident occurred.

She said details surrounding the incident were still sketchy and that an attempted murder case had been registered with the SA Police Service.

“I understand he is in critical condition and we can’t reveal his name…,” Mulamu said.

Police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo told News24 that there were still no new details related to the investigation and that no arrests had been made.

The Hawks have established a joint team with the provincial detectives and IPID (the Independent Police Investigative Directorate) to investigate the matter.

After that footage we saw from Nyanga, South Africa’s murder capital, last week, it’s clear criminals don’t fear that investigative work.
