The power is out, the day is dragging on, and you still have a few unanswered emails in your inbox to get to.

Nah, let’s take a quick break for a good news story.

You may never have heard of Khayelitsha’s Velokhaya Life Cycling Academy, but they’re changing the lives of many promising youngsters in the township.

Some of this country’s finest up and coming riders can be found speeding their way through Khayelitsha, although the academy is about so much more than two wheels.

According to Sipho Mona, the general manager of the Academy, cycling is just the carrot, and education is the purpose.

Mona, himself a graduate of the Academy, is as passionate about producing lawyers, doctors and psychologists as he is about producing professional cyclists. The centre is a busy place on most afternoons, with children doing homework in the learning lab, younger recruits doing fitness exercises to earn a bike seat, and the road cyclists (roadies) setting off on their three-hour training ride.

Consider this your Feel Good Friday vibes sorted:

If that doesn’t put a pep in your step, I’m not sure what will. Some of the riders are actually competing in the Absa Cape Epic as we speak, which is a testament to their determination.

As you can see from the end of the video, Yoco has set up a way for you to support the Academy if you so wish.

It’s as simple as a few clicks, so head here to get involved with a donation.
