Pizza is the ultimate comfort food.
You know what you’re getting, and that’s usually cheesy deliciousness made even better by a carefully selected combination of toppings.
The Pepperoni Classic from Butler’s Pizza is a personal fave, although I am always tempted to get the Rotherham, in case Seth finds out.
Nobody is more deserving of praise than the genius, or geniuses, that invented pizza.
Whoever is responsible for this incredible invention, however, would rotate in their grave if they knew what people were getting up to in some so-called pizza parlours around the world.
Let’s start with Las Vegas, where you can now buy a pizza topped with chorizo, goat cheese, caramelized onions, arugula and, wait for it, lime-and garlic-roasted grasshoppers.
The grasshopper pizza in Vegas is part of a larger trend that’s sprung out of the global obsession with influencers and Instagram ‘likes’.
Here’s KSLA News:
Outrageous pizzas that go beyond cheese and pepperoni are making a splash on social media.
If you can’t decide between pizza or burgers for lunch, now you can have both. New York restaurant Krave It offers a pizza topped with french fries, fried eggs and 16 cheeseburgers.
The pizza then is finished off with chipotle sauce and bacon.
Other stupid pizza toppings that have made it onto the socials include mac and cheese, fried chicken and waffles, and a dessert pizza filled with ice cream and topped with caramel popcorn and chocolate sauce.
Founder Mandahar says that at Krave It, “we basically believe in doing things that anyone else is afraid of doing.”
He says he is constantly thinking of out-of-the-box pizza combinations so people will post them on Instagram.
“If we come up with an idea and post it right away, you know, we’ll get 5,000, 10,000, 20,000 views in like an hour, two hours.”
Sorry, but it isn’t fear that keeps people from messing with a perfectly good pizza, it’s common sense.
“I guess it’s a wow factor. It’s definitely Instagrammable because everything has to be these days, right?”
A good pizza was perfectly Instagrammable before someone mashed up a Big Mac from McDonald’s and called it a ‘topping’:
The truth is that none of the above counts as pizza. What you’re looking at is a pile of unrelated foods pretending to be pizza.
A good pizza is one of life’s simple pleasures and the simple tried and tested kind, like the famous S.M.O.G, or Seth’s very own ‘The Rotherham’.
Seriously, why would you want to complicate something that good with an entire roast chicken?
Yes, that was sold to the general public. No, we don’t want to give it a bash.
Butler’s Pizza has been doing it right for almost 30 years and they’ve never strayed from what Capetonians know and love. Here’s a reminder of their specials:
Tried, tested, and perfect every time.
