Two types of green outfits flooded my Instagram newsfeed this weekend: those with high hopes of our Bokke pulling through with a win (I don’t mean to poke any bruises), and age-defying Jennifer Lopez strutting down the runway at Milan Fashion Week in her redesigned Versace dress.

Let’s throwback to the year 2000. A simpler time. Y2K fears were not met, the Cha Cha Slide was taking over dance floors worldwide, and in June it was publicised that Google would become the default search engine provider for Yahoo!.

Jennifer Lopez was also a hot commodity, and a certain plunging green Versace dress worn at the 42nd Grammy Awards not only raised many eyebrows, dropped many jaws and had many fashion critics talking, but also increased the immediate demand for images on Google Image Search.

Former CEO Eric Schmidt wrote in 2015 about the ridiculous number of search queries Lopez’s dress received the night of and day after the music award show. Google was already trying to figure out how to service its users, who wanted “more than just text.”

“At the time, it was the most popular search query we had ever seen,” Schmidt wrote. “But we had no sure-fire way of getting users exactly what they wanted: JLo wearing that dress. Google Image Search was born.”

In honour of this momentous anniversary, Google partnered with the infamous dress’s designer, Versace, to recreate the dress, all the while showing off Google’s products in the process.

The blog notes that the company’s VR painting app, Tilt Brush, “helped decorate the runway space with digital artwork inspired by the new print.” The show even incorporated a demonstration of Google’s voice-activated AI helper, Google Assistant.

Can we take a moment to appreciate that Jennifer Lopez is 50? Here she is, along with the story about the dress, then and now:

When I grow up, I want to be her.
