We shouldn’t care about this, and neither should you, but stick around for the memes.
Wayne Rooney’s long-suffering wife Coleen (above left) has had enough.
She’s fed up with stories about her family’s personal life constantly being fed to British rag, The Sun, and she’s been playing the long game to find out how this has been happening.
Finally, yesterday, she dropped the bombshell on her Instagram account, outing Rebekah Vardy (above right), the wife of English and Leicester City football star, Jamie Vardy, as the leaker.
10 points for the big reveal at the end:
Before you try your hand at a pun, yes, she’s already been dubbed WAGatha Christie.
Rebekah has hit back via her Instagram account, claiming she has nothing to do with the leaks:
Broken heart emoji. The past tense ‘liked’ used. Friendship over.
HuffPost reports that the Sun has now been scrambling to cover its tracks:
The Sun appeared to have removed the three stories that Rooney referenced in her post from its website, but then restored them with a note: “On Wednesday October 9th, Coleen Rooney said that she made this story up in an effort to find out who was leaking to the Press.”
There’s even a little history between their husbands:
The pair represented England together at the 2016 European Championship tournament, when the team’s manager Roy Hodgson was forced to deny there had been a spat between the two following reports Rooney was angry at the rising profile of his colleague’s wife.
Given that the Premier League is on an international break, the Rugby World Cup has cancelled England’s final group match, and British politics is a festering pit of despair, everyone is lapping up this drama.
You can find some great memes and chirps here, and also here, but here are some favourites:
Classic.
Rebekah is quite a controversial figure, and if you want a deeper dive into her past, head here.
For actual football fans, the dream outcome here is for Derby County, who Wayne will join at the start of next year, and Vardy’s Leicester City to meet in a cup competition, just to add some extra spice to the showdown.
