Yesterday, Nicholas Ninow testified in court during the first day of sentencing proceedings at the High Court in Pretoria.

For some inexplicable reason, he decided to read out his initial apology in the form of a poem, which comes across as a desperate attempt to try and land a more lenient sentence.

A reminder that he raped a young child in the toilet of a Dros restaurant.

Also taking to the stand was Pauline Gericke, Ninow’s grandmother, who was largely responsible for raising him.

She detailed how Ninow became a different person when he was on drugs, with the convicted rapist saying he was on day three of a CAT and crystal meth binge when he committed his disgusting crime.

During his testimony, Ninow also spoke about how widespread drug use is within South Africa’s prison system, reports News24:

…his drug usage continued after he was arrested and imprisoned. Ninow, who did not apply for bail, has been an awaiting-trail prisoner at Kgosi Mampuru prison in Tshwane since his arrest.

“When you are in that cell, there are drugs all around, there are drugs everywhere in prison. There is no rehabilitation in prison.”

Ninow added he had used drugs on at least 20 different occasions in prison.

Sentencing proceedings continue today.
