In case you didn’t know, it’s been a rather wild 24 hours or so with regards to the Royal Family.
The Queen has issued a public statement about Harry and Meghan, the Prince himself delivered a heartfelt speech about how he was left with no other option, and there is wall-to-wall coverage of what it all means going forward.
I only wish that Harry and Meghan would be left alone to live their lives in peace, but I can somewhat understand the fascination.
Whilst some people are more than happy to portray Meghan as a Royal Family homewrecker, it’s clear that Harry has been looking for a way out for some time.
Not that Piers Morgan is much bothered with that:
What a sad, angry little man.
Anyway, back to Harry and how this has all been a long time coming.
Sky News has outlined some of the triggers that came long before Meghan:
The Times’ royal correspondent Roya Nikkhah told Sky News: “Tensions have been brewing for quite a long time – a lot of people have been quick to point the finger at his wife, (but) it predates her arrival…
Some of the evidence he wanted to do things differently can be traced back to 2013, when he spent four months on tour in Afghanistan…
Being in another country was closer to normal life for Harry, but he confessed sometimes even that brought too many eyes on him.
“For me it’s not that normal because I go into the cookhouse and everyone has a good old gawp, and that’s one thing that I dislike about being here,” he said.
“Because there’s plenty of guys in there that have never met me, therefore look at me as Prince Harry and not as Captain Wales, which is frustrating. Which is probably another reason why I’d love to be out in the PBs [patrol bases], away from it all. It’s as normal as it’s going to get. I’m one of the guys. I don’t get treated any differently.”
Clearly, the scrutiny of the public’s prying eyes has been weighing heavy on Harry for a while now.
Also, let’s not forget that being relentlessly hounded by the press is pretty much what caused his mother’s death.
Harry has openly spoken about looking at a way out, too:
“There was a time I felt I wanted out,” he told the Mail on Sunday.
“But then I decided to stay in [The Firm] and work out a role for myself.”
Harry said it was his loyalty to the Queen and charity work which persuaded him to stay.
It would appear that those priorities have now shifted, although the prince is still keen to remain involved in some Royal Family duties, but has been given “no other option”.
Many will say that Meghan was the final nail in the coffin, but the signs have always been there.
When somebody says that “every single time I see a camera, every single time I hear a click, every single time I see a flash it takes me straight back” when talking about his mother’s death, he’s clearly grown weary of life in the public eye.
He will never escape that, and the press will follow them wherever they are, but there’s no doubt that life in Canada, or North America as the exact details are still be ironed out, should ease some of the pressure.
Fair play, really – let them live in peace.
