BREAKING: South Africa records first coronavirus deaths…

Day one of the South African lockdown – how are you handling it?

The next 21 days will push many people right to the edge, and some well over it, and it hasn’t taken long for community Facebook groups to start erupting with anger over those who aren’t adhering to the rules.

(If you’re alone during the lockdown, here are some tips for staying sane.)

Without naming the Facebook group, the image above, of a person walking their dog on the beach (that’s clearly not allowed, and has been very well documented), was shared this morning with the caption “Still people walking their dogs…”

The comments section erupted into anger, insults, and bickering, as we have come to expect with all forms of social media.

Within an hour of being posted, there were close to 200 comments. Here’s a tiny taste:

    And:

    Add this to the mix:

    One more for good measure:

I could go on, but you get the message.

Oh, and it’s not a problem limited to Cape beaches. This from Pretoria:

In Sea Point, the penny clearly hadn’t dropped:

That spirit of ubuntu alive and well…

Yes, it’s so tough not being allowed to walk your dog, but others are forced to endure 21 days in cramped living quarters without access to running water and other basic human needs.

Yes, we all love animals, but this is bigger than you, and bigger than your pooch, and requires everyone pulling in the same direction.

People have already been arrested in South Africa for non-compliance, so you’ve been warned.

In addition, South Africa has just recorded our first two deaths from the coronavirus, and cases have soared past 1 000. What will it take for the penny to drop that we are in huge, huge trouble?

Please, people – be kind to one another and think of the bigger picture.
