Most of us can’t get hold of medical-grade masks, and besides, they should be reserved for healthcare workers.
In light of this, many South Africans are wearing cloth masks. The idea is that if everyone is wearing a mask, those infected with the virus are shielded from passing it on through coughing or sneezing.
Physical distancing measures have also been encouraged that require us to stand at least two metres apart at all times, but a recent study has shown that this might not be the far enough.
CNN visited a lab at Florida Atlantic University that is simulating a human cough to understand how far cough droplets can travel, alongside the effectiveness of a mask to prevent infection.
Take a look:
Masks are mandatory for anyone returning to work this week, as part of new health and safety guidelines under alert level 4.
We’re also all required to wear a mask when leaving the house.
If you’d like to make your own, here’s how.
Finally, if the above video tells us anything, it’s that a mask isn’t enough. Maintain distance between yourself and others, practice handwashing and hygiene methods, and stay safe out there.
