  • You Won’t Be Able To Buy Booze Tomorrow

I don’t know about you, but ever since the lockdown started, I’ve struggled to keep up with which day of the week it is.

If you can relate, consider this a friendly reminder that it’s Thursday, and the last day that you can stock up on booze before the weekend kicks in.

Alert level 3 restrictions say that alcohol can only be bought from Monday to Thursday, between 9AM and 5PM.

If you’re tempted to take your chances over the weekend, keep the following in mind, per TimesLIVE:

National police spokesperson Brig Vish Naidoo said anyone found buying or selling alcohol…would face the might of the law.

“From 5pm on Thursday until Monday morning, people are not allowed to carry liquor. We want to prevent people from getting intoxicated and getting together. We would be opening an avenue for them to start parties, which will cause a further spread of the disease,” he said.

To put it differently, while it’s not illegal to drink, you can’t do it in public or try to buy it, or – and this is important – transport it in your car.

Naidoo, again, this time from EWN:

“…no one is allowed to transport alcohol except for those that are actually licensed to do so,” Naidoo said, reiterating that “any other time beyond that will be a contravention of the regulations”.

If you’re busted transporting alcohol, you could get arrested.

    UPDATE: This via CapeTalk:

After Brigadier Naidoo’s comments were published online, he was contacted by Danie Cronje, a specialist attorney in liquor law.

Cronje confirmed with Naidoo that level 3 regulations do not contain any restriction on the transport of liquor by members of the public.

This means that transporting booze is permitted on all days, including Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays.

So you’re good to go with regards having booze in the car, but you still can’t purchase it outside of the trading hours.

Yet another reason to order online and have it delivered to your door, although delivery services also cannot operate outside of the legally mandated hours.

I’d hate for you to be deprived of a hard-earned sundowner, especially if you returned to work this week, so make sure you’re on top of the new rules.
