Across America, and other parts of the world, citizens have taken to the streets to protest police brutality, and a system that routinely fails to hold anybody accountable for the violence perpetrated against black men in particular.

George Floyd’s murder is the latest example of unarmed black men (and black women, such as Breonna Taylor) dying at the hands of law enforcement, although that problem is not unique to the US.

In South Africa, Collins Khosa and 10 other black men died ‘in police action’ during lockdown, which formed part of Carte Blanche’s look at police brutality in South Africa.

Last night, over in the US, John Oliver devoted the entire Last Week Tonight show to discuss how “the histories of policing and white supremacy are intertwined, the roadblocks to fixing things, and some potential paths forward”.

This would be especially necessary viewing for the #AllLivesMatter and #BlueLivesMatter brigade, but I doubt they would have read this far, let alone watched the video.

For those interested in better understanding why US law enforcement needs an overhaul, and what can be done to ensure that happens, consider this half an hour well spent:
