  • Marmite Hit By Coronavirus

It’s fine, I’m more of a Bovril person anyway.

Listen, it spreads easier, especially on toast, and it has a meatier taste, obviously, because it’s made from beef stock.

Marmite, on the other hand, is strictly vegetarian, with yeast extract as the main ingredient.

Wherever you stand on the Marmite versus Bovril debate, I’m just glad we can all agree that pineapple on pizza should be a war crime.

Fans of Marmite, however, can kiss the 400-gram jars goodbye, as a yeast shortage caused by the coronavirus pandemic means the company is only producing 250-gram jars.

As the Guardian points out, this is the “yeast of our worries”, but here we are. The potentially life-altering news broke yesterday, thanks to this exchange on Twitter:

Basically, brewers slowed and stalled production when pubs shut as part of the efforts to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

A summary of the replies that followed:

The Twitter thread split lovers and haters of Marmite: “You hate to see it. Or love to see it,” wrote one. “Some good news at last,” wrote another. Another tweeted that this was “Marmageddon”.

    High five for ‘Marmageddon’.

So that’s it, hey. That’s the whole story.

In dire need of more Marmite-related content? I will point you in the direction of Marmite Smooth Peanut Butter and be on my way.
