We can all admit to having a few gaps in our knowledge of history.

Even if you studied the subject at university, there’s no way that you covered everything that there is to know.

We’re busy people, and while I’m an advocate for cracking open a book, not everyone has the time or the energy to delve into something that will likely cover one event, or historical figure, when there’s a whole world out there to take in.

That’s where podcasts are useful, with a range of excellent bite-sized offerings that take a look at the past.

Mashable rounded up a few, and we chose our top five (in no particular order):

    History Becomes Her

In our Season 1 finale of History Becomes Her, @CCriadoPerez and @tkingdot talk about the gender data gap and the two women from history they admire the most. pic.twitter.com/qrtnWtT9Hj

    — History Becomes Her (@hbhpod) July 2, 2020

In every episode, host Rachel Thompson talks to contemporary women making history about the history-making women of the past.

    Making Gay History

History is rarely told through a queer lens, and this incredible podcast aims to change that by telling the forgotten stories of LGBTQIAA++ people who fought for decades to secure equal rights, civil rights, and often, basic human rights.

    Lore

The synopsis for the latest episode reads: “History has proven just how good humans are at making things better, from weapons and tools to medicine and education. But some advancements come at a price, while creating some horrifying folklore in the process”.

Lore is a podcast that looks at the spookier side of history by taking a deep dive into the myths and legends that shaped societies.

    Blowback

This podcast has been described as “unapologetically leftwing”.

It tells the story of the Iraq war from a leftist point of view, that calls out the right-wing government that launched it.

Blowback details how horrific the Iraq War was, how its after-effects still shape America today, and how few consequences befell the people who sold it to the public.

    Slow Burn

COMING WEDNESDAY: SLOW BURN SEASON 4

How did David Duke, a Nazi sympathizer and former Klan leader, become a mainstream figure in American politics? And what did it take to stop him?

Slow Burn offers a new story each season, which takes a historical event that you think you know, and then reveals more about it than you ever knew.

And, if you’re feeling really creative, why not try your hand at making your own?
