Now that we’re moving down to alert level 1, from Monday, September 21, three of our major airports – King Shaka International, Cape Town International, and OR Tambo – will once again be open for international travel.

When it comes to who will be allowed in, it’s expected that the country will only let in visitors from countries with low infection rates.

A list of approved countries will be announced in the next few days.

Then, all new arrivals in South Africa will be required to provide a negative COVID-19 test result taken within 72 hours of departure or face a quarantine on arrival.

South Africans leaving the country will also be required to present a negative test no older than 72 hours, and submit to screenings before heading out.

We searched Skyscanner for one-way flights for one adult leaving October 27 from Cape Town International to London’s Heathrow Airport.

Here’s the cheapest option with Safair and Etihad Airways:

Just the 26 hours of travel, and two stops, though.

The second cheapest flight comes to us from QATAR Airways:

Lovely, you’re down to 19 hours now.

According to the site, this is the quickest flight between Cape Town and London via British Airways:

For information on guidelines and protocols for entering Heathrow airport, head here.

Note that flight prices will vary depending on your departure date.

Business Insider SA looked into what you’ll pay for return flights to some major hubs on airlines from Johannesburg, on or near December 1, to December 31, booked directly via the airlines’ respective websites.

These prices were in effect as of yesterday evening (September 17, 2020).

    • RwandAir to Kigali: R5,360 ($346)
    • Ethiopian to Addis Ababa: R5,971
    • Kenya Airways to Nairobi: R12,530
    • Air Mauritius to Port Louis: R10,971
    • Air Seychelles to Mahé: R9,006
    • Qatar Airways, to Doha: R13,817
    • Emirates to Dubai: R16,198
    • El Al to Tel Aviv: R6,279
    • Lufthansa to Munich: R10,030
    • Swiss International to Zurich: R8,660

Keep in mind that we don’t have all of the information that we need to definitely say which countries we can and can’t travel to.

Even if their borders are open to us today, due to the unpredictable nature of the pandemic, that could change at a moment’s notice.

In other words, you’ll need to do a bit of research if you’re planning a trip.
