La Colombe has been serving guests superb food for decades.

It has accumulated countless accolades, including the title of South Africa’s number one restaurant at the 2019 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards.

This year, in early August, TripAdvisor crowned it the 13th best restaurant in the world, which is high praise if you take into account the global competition.

With its French-meets-Asian cuisine, it was the only South African restaurant to be recognised on TripAdvisor’s Top 25 list.

Over the years, La Colombe had undergone some pretty substantial changes, such as the major move from Constantia Uitsig to Silvermist Estate in 2014.

When 2020 came along, they had to navigate some really high stakes challenges, including adapting to the temporary closure of all restaurants and the transition to takeaway services during the national lockdown.

More than a few restaurants had to face, and are still facing, financial troubles, but La Colombe managed to stay afloat.

Chef James spoke to Eat Out about how they did it:

In honour of Heritage Month, if you can, try and support our local businesses. Whether that’s a restaurant or a retailer, they’ve navigated some really choppy waters these past few months, and there are tough times still ahead.
