When Siya Kolisi led the Springboks out against England on June 9, 2018, becoming the first black player in history to do so, even the most optimistic supporter would have been hard-pressed to see a World Cup win in Japan roughly 17 months later.

Yet here we are, on day 338 out of 1 449 as world champions, and I still get goosebumps thinking about that day.

This past Sunday, the first episode of Chasing the Sun aired on SuperSport, and already the stockpile of tissues is being depleted.

There are many powerful moments from the episode, but none more so than beloved Xhosa commentator Kaunda Ntunja’s commentary on the day Kolisi made history.

Ntunja tragically passed away in July at the age of 38, but his memory lives on in videos like this.

If this doesn’t cause a lump in the throat, then you’re made of far sterner stuff than I am:

“A cement truck with no reverse gear” is so wonderfully South African, but it’s the pride in Ntunja’s voice that really does it for me.
