  • New Online Retailer Keen To Dethrone Takealot

The South African online retail space has a clear top dog, and that dog is Takealot.

According to stats from last September (which feels like a lifetime ago), the company was making in excess of R700 million in revenue a month.

Obviously, things have changed dramatically since then, but the stats for the financial year ending March 31, 2020, were still very impressive.

In fact, in June, “a source close to Takealot” told MyBroadband that the company was generating close to R1 billion in sales per month.

Any business that wants to eat into Takealot’s massive market share is going to have an uphill battle on its hands, but Everybody, a new online shopping platform set to launch soon, appears confident it can make a dent.

MyBroadband reports that Everyshop is backed by JD Group, a member of Pepkor Holdings, which also owns the likes of Incredible Connection and HiFi Corp:

JD Group currently offers consumers a wide range of technology products, computers, appliances, and gadgets through Incredible Connection and HiFi Corp.

It also provides household goods, including furniture, mattresses, and appliances through Rochester, Sleepmasters, Bradlows, and Russells…

The increased need for convenience through online shopping has inspired the company to look at new ways to serve its customers…

This led to the formation of Everyshop – an online store that will offer South African consumers a new “one-stop” shopping channel.

If you want to be a “one-stop” shop, you’re basically taking aim at Takealot.

Everyshop, through its existing stores, does already have a thorough national network of 16 distribution centres, which could help it rival the speed at which Takealot delivers orders.

The company doesn’t have an official launch date as of yet, but did provide MyBroadband with two ‘teaser images’.

I’m getting strong Takealot vibes from this one:

Reporting on the impending launch, Stuff spells out how tough a task Everyshop will face:

Takealot has us all in its’ pockets, right? While there are some great online stores like Loot and Raru to contest Takealot’s dominance, it’s still the top dog in terms of variety, stock and sometimes even price.

Selling everything from food to high-end computer equipment, Takealot has built itself the reputation of being the online store that most people search first for whatever they’re in the market for.

So it’ll be an uphill battle for Everyshop, a new online store that’s set to compete with Takealot…

Perhaps Everyshop could set itself apart by running sales with discounts that are actually discounted?

Ultimately, competition is healthy for the South African consumer, so I say bring it on.

    Let the battle begin.
