This story is suitable to read at work.

Which, for the most part, means from home. Anyway, you’re in the clear.

The fighting cock is a rooster that was taking part in an illegal cockfight in the Philippines, and the tragically unlucky police officer is Lieutenant Christine Bolok.

His femoral artery was sliced by the rooster’s gaff, which is “a razor-sharp steel blade which is typically attached to the leg of fighting roosters”.

The injury was sustained when Bolok picked up the rooster as he gathered evidence related to the unlawful event.

According to the BBC, he was rushed to hospital after sustaining the injury to his left thigh, but was declared dead upon arrival.

Whilst cockfighting is not illegal in the Philippines and is allowed under licensed conditions at certain times, it is currently banned due to COVID-19:

Provincial police chief Colonel Arnel Apud told news agency AFP that the accident was “unfortunate”, calling it “a piece of bad luck that I cannot explain”.

“I could not believe it when it was first reported to me. This is the first time in my 25 years as a policeman that I lost a man due to a fighting cock’s spur.”

The police chief also sent his “deepest sympathy” to the victim’s family, said PNA.

Following the raid, three people were arrested, although three more suspects remain at large.

In total, just 550 Philippine Pesos (around R185) were confiscated, along with seven fighting roosters and two sets of gaffs.
