Criminals are getting hella creative these days.

On Saturday, a truck piled high with grass brooms at the Lebombo border post in Mpumalanga, intended on entering Mozambique, with a Ford Ranger tucked underneath them.

And they would have got away with it, too, if it weren’t for those pesky border police.

The cops thought the truck, sporting a Mozambican number plate, looked suspicious.

Here’s a statement by Colonel Donald Mdhluli, via News24:

“The members were convinced that there might be something sinister about the truck. The driver was not available and members got information that he had gone to the SARS offices to complete certain documents,” the statement read.

“Members then went to look for him at the SARS offices, but they could not find him and they began searching the truck.”

When they removed the brooms, they found the Ford Ranger with a false number plate:

    From another angle:

It was later discovered that it had been stolen at a garage in Sandton, Gauteng, on November 30.

A manhunt has been launched to find the driver.

“In the meantime, anyone with information that can assist police in the investigation should call 013 793 7382 / 013 793 7321 or Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 or send information via My SAPS app which can be downloaded to any smartphone. All information will be treated as confidential and callers may opt to remain anonymous,” Mdhluli said.

Trucks carrying massive loads of brooms should probably expect a few delays in the future when trying to cross the border.
