Last year, Danish entrepreneur, aerospace engineer, and murderer Peter Madsen finally admitted that he had killed Kim Wall, a Swedish journalist who went missing after Madsen took her out to sea in his 17-metre homemade submarine in August 2017.

That image above shows Madsen and Wall aboard the submarine, UC3 Nautilus, on August 10 in Copenhagen harbour.

10 days after she was reported missing, Wall’s dismembered torso was found off the coast of Copenhagen, and her head, legs, and clothes were later discovered in bags at sea in October.

Having been convicted of the murder in 2018, Madsen was sentenced to life imprisonment, although he did briefly escape in October of last year, before being recaptured by Danish authorities.

Given the intense worldwide media coverage that has followed the case from start to finish, it seemed inevitable that it would eventually be turned into a series, and here we are.

It appears The Investigation may actually be worth a watch, with Variety calling it “2021’s First Great Drama”:

So many shows provide a giddily indulgent look at the dark side of humanity. Here, though, Wall’s killer is neither seen nor mentioned by name throughout the series…

Its subject matter is, tragically, perfectly apt: Wall was known in life for superlative work as a journalist, bringing underexposed cases to light through rigorous reporting. The similar rigor of those seeking to bring closure to the far-too-short story of her life was one way of honoring her.

“The Investigation,” so deeply a tribute to what is good — self-sacrificing, humble, serious when it counts — about the communities we share, is another.

The Investigation started streaming on HBO yesterday (February 1), and I reckon smashing all six episodes in a few days shouldn’t be too hard, provided you can muster the energy to read subtitles.
