Just when you thought that, with flatlining stock prices, the GameStop saga would start to fade, Reddit pulled another trick out of its sleeve.
By fade, I mean get absorbed into the capitalist machine – there’s already a site tracking stock-related mentions on Reddit so that the big dogs can get in on the action if another ‘Gamestop’ comes along.
Moving on to that trick, which lasted five seconds, and happened at this year’s Super Bowl (early this morning, South African time).
According to The Verge, Reddit spent its “entire marketing budget on five seconds of airtime”, to air an advert celebrating GameStop.
Don’t blink:
If you’re wondering how an entire marketing budget amounted to just five seconds, keep in mind that it costs upwards of $5,6 million for a 30-second slot at the game.
You may have noticed a message at the end of the ad, which would have been tough to read in the moment unless you’re some sort of savant.
