  • Dark Web Investigation Reveals Most Common Passwords

    You know the drill.

A few random capitals, some or other character (maybe it’s ‘$’ instead of ‘S’), chuck a ‘123’ on the end and voila, your password is good to go.

I can think of a few Bitcoin owners who wish their passwords were as generic, but shame, they have suffered enough.

A convenient, easy to remember password is one way to look at things, but if that’s your technique then you’re leaving the door wide open for disaster further down the road.

A 2017 investigation found that upwards of 80% of hacking-related data breaches stem from poor password security, and it’s amazing how often the same passwords end up on lists like the one compiled by ID Agent, a dark web monitoring company.

Having scanned close to three million passwords circulated on the dark web (a part of the internet accessible only through using special software, which means users and website operators can remain anonymous or untraceable), familiar patterns were on display time and time again.

Via Huff Post, here are the 20 most common passwords found on the dark web during 2020, starting with the most often seen:

    123456
    password
    12345678
    12341234
    1asdasdasdasd
    Qwerty123
    Password1
    123456789
    Qwerty1
    :12345678secret
    Abc123
    111111
    stratfor
    lemonfish
    sunshine
    123123123
    1234567890
    Password123
    123123
    1234567

Yeah, it’s clear some of us never learn.

Worse still, the average person reused their terrible password for 14 different accounts, making it far more likely that they would suffer multiple breaches.

I know it can be a bit cumbersome, but it’s recommended that you create a unique password for all of your accounts, which don’t contain names (yours or otherwise), or a linear sequence of numbers.
