Friends was an instant classic from the moment it first aired in 1994, and in the downtime that we’ve had recently, it resurfaced on many a screen around the world.
It seems the world is currently having a moment for 90s nostalgia, as fast-fashion chains are also selling T-shirts with the Friends name all over them.
Pick n Pay even has some, if you’re into that.
I get it, kind of, as there is something endearing about seeing a group of friends laughing and cosying up together, pulling each other through tough times, and making everything out there look bearable.
So it’s really the perfect time for HBO to be creating a television special of the Friends reunion.
The six members – Monica (Courteney Cox), Chandler (Matthew Perry), Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow), Joey (Matt LeBlanc), Ross (David Schwimmer), and Rachel (Jennifer Aniston), albeit slightly older versions of themselves – are reuniting for the first time on screen since the NBC sitcom aired its final episode nearly 20 years ago.
Finally, we get to see the trailer, which doesn’t come without a little tear or a little giggle:
The gang filmed 10 seasons at Stage 24 on the Warner Bros. Studio lot in Burbank, California, which is exactly where they returned to pick up where they left off: debating whether Ross and Rachel were actually on a break.
The trailer is going all out to satisfy everything a Friends fan may want, as per Huff Post:
The cast retraces their old steps, as they quiz each other about Friends trivia, perform a table read of some classic scenes, and poke around a recreation of the iconic, highly implausible New York apartment where much of the show took place.
Directed by Ben Winston, the special is unscripted and will have a voiceover from James Corden.
If the gang of six isn’t enough, there are loads of other special guests, including David Beckham, Justin Bieber, BTS, Cindy Crawford, Cara Delevingne, Lady Gaga, and more.
In an interview shortly before the trailer came out, Aniston reflected on her Friends journey:
“It goes so beyond the work and what the show was, which was in and of itself just a spectacular phenomenon,” Aniston said in the interview.
“But the friendships-slash-family that came out of it … You can’t put words to that, really. It’s priceless.”
Well, not really; the cast members were paid a fair price of more than double their former per-episode fee for the reunion.
Nobody’s complaining, though.
The show will air on May 27.
