Chloé Zhao won Best Picture and Best Director for Nomadland earlier this year, and now she’s bringing us her latest movie, Eternals, from Marvel.
There is some work to be done on Marvel’s part, in order to hype audiences up enough to connect to this brand new ensemble cast, reports The Verge, which is based on a less popular franchise.
Eternals is already out there in the form of comics from superstar writer Kieron Gillen, but still, the group of immortal heroes who have existed alongside human civilisation for centuries aren’t exactly household names.
Plus, they often get mistaken for the gods of human mythology.
Marvel has taken this kind of gamble before with Guardians of the Galaxy, which is now one of Marvel’s most beloved group of characters.
But other Marvel projects haven’t always been as successful, like Inhumans, for example, which was cancelled after a single season.
Luckily, Eternals has an Oscar-winning director and an awesome A-list cast that may just guarantee its success.
The cast is easily the most exciting and diverse lineup of actors in any of the Marvel Cinematic Universe films to date.
Time to name drop: the cast includes Gemma Chan (Sersi from Game Of Thrones), Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Salma Hayek, Lia McHugh, and Don Lee, as well as GoT expats Richard Madden and Kit Harington.
With regards to the plot:
The trailer doesn’t actually do much to showcase the plot of what Eternals will be about, instead focusing on the civilization-spanning scope of the superhero team and its members throughout human history.
“We have watched and guided. We have helped them progress and seen them accomplish wonders,” Salma Hayek’s Ajak muses, as we see the Eternals help humanity raise crops, establish cities, and war throughout the ages.
“Throughout the years, we have never interfered — until now.”
As to what threat is causing the Eternals to join together and intervene in the course of human events? That will have to wait until future trailers (or the actual film itself).
A small teaser for the film was released earlier in May, but now Marvel has finally revealed a longer trailer for Eternals:
Eternals is set to hit theatres on November 5.
