People in fortunate positions around the world today are out to experience the glorious ‘Super Flower Blood Moon’ that is on the rise.

This is the first total lunar eclipse in more than two years and will occur when the moon moves into the Earth’s shadow.

The light in the atmosphere will make it appear red, hence the name “Blood Moon”.

    Via TimeLIVE, NASA explains more:

“The eclipsed moon is dimly illuminated by red-orange light left over from all the sunsets and sunrises occurring around the world at that time. The more dust or clouds in Earth’s atmosphere during the eclipse, the redder the moon will appear.”

But the moon isn’t stopping there; it will also be a perigee or a “Super Moon,” which means it will be at the closest point to Earth in its orbit, making it appear about 7% larger than normal and 15% brighter, SABC News reports.

This Super Moon happens often, but when it occurs in May, a time where flowers bloom in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s called the “Flower Moon”.

Put it all together and we have ‘Super Flower Blood Moon’.

While the ‘Blood Moon’ part of things won’t be visible to us in South Africa, we will be able to spot the ‘Super Flower Moon’, which Dr, Daniel Cunnama, a science engagement astronomer at the SA Astronomical Observatory, says will still be incredible.

However, we will have the chance to stream ‘Blood Moon’ viewings from various YouTube channels based in Northern America and Australia, wherefrom the phenomena will clearly be visible.

The Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles will start streaming live from 10:45AM our time:

The Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, will start its broadcast from 11:30AM our time:

The Astronomical Society of South Australia’s stream will also start from 11:30AM our time:

South Australia is a good seven and a half hours ahead of us, so you’ll get a good glimpse soon enough.

The next total lunar eclipse will be May 15-16, 2022.
