This one is all about Val Kilmer – the actor who performed iconic roles for blockbusters like Top Gun, Batman Forever, Tombstone, and The Doors.
He describes himself as the “first guy I knew to own a video camera” and now his personal home movies have been transformed into a documentary, called Val, that will premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, reports Variety.
Kilmer “lived a magical life and captured quite a bit of it” before being diagnosed with throat cancer, which has made it difficult for him to speak and hard to understand.
It is this unfortunate twist in his life that has probably made him want to tell his story now more than ever.
The film will chronicle pivotal moments in the star’s life, including his time at Juilliard, as well as fathering two children, Mercedes and Jack.
Besides plotting the actor’s journey from making home movies with his brother to performing those iconic roles listed above, there will also be behind-the-scenes footage showing Kilmer’s life between films, as seen in moments in the trailer when he’s messing around with the young Sean Penn and Kevin Bacon.
The documentary spans four decades and is an amalgamation of hundreds of hours of film and videotape that were stored in boxes and stacked in a garage.
Kilmer does some of his own speaking in the film, despite being reduced to a rasp. For the rest, he has a narrator to help tell his story.
Val is directed by Leo Scott and Ting Poo, who produce alongside Kilmer and others.
Amazon Studios released the trailer for Val yesterday:
Val will be in theatres on July 23, and released on Prime Video on August 6.
