Statistics South African can confirm that white South Africans are leaving the country in large numbers.
This is despite the country’s overall population growth, with an estimated net increase of 520 628 people between 2020 and mid-year 2021, according to Stats SA via BusinessTech.
That’s also despite the negative impact that the COVID-19 pandemic would have had on the population.
The demographics within this growth period show that the black South African population increased by 486 602, while the coloured population grew by 47 228, and the Asian/Indian population grew by 4 109 within the year.
Meanwhile, Stats SA reveals that the white population decreased by 17 311 people during the period, which the organisation chalks up to emigration.
The white population percentage has been on a downward trajectory for some years now, making up 9,0% of the population in 2011, 8,1% in 2016, 7,9% in 2019, and 7,8% now.
Migration into South Africa over the period spanning 2016 to 2021 shows just shy of 900 000 arrivals from across the continent:

Gauteng has seen the largest inflow of migrants, with the Western Cape second:

In total, 91 000 white South Africans have left the country during the period in question, a number Stats SA reckons would have been higher if 16 of the 60 months under review weren’t affected by COVID-19 restrictions.
Over the last 35 years, 611 500 white South Africans have left the country:

Stats SA is expected to conduct a national census in October 2021 and will get more accurate population figures then.
