In the modern world, especially with Millennials and Gen Z taking over, movies have lost the charm they once used to have. Today, people have countless options to spend their time on, from online games to social media; these options never end.
There was a time when people didn’t have as many choices as they do today; everyone watched movies because there were no better options available. The movie industry boomed in the late 20th century with new inventions and breakthroughs; people were amazed at the marvels of the movie industry and rushed to the cinemas to watch the latest premiere.
However, during the 21st century, with the advent of video games, this has changed. Countless people, especially the younger generation, are much more inclined towards the gaming experience than the cinematic one. There are myriad reasons for this; some have to do with the incomplete experience that movies provide in comparison to gaming, while others pertain to the wide range of options available in online gaming.
What Makes Online Gaming Better Than Movies?
There are countless factors that might explain why online gaming has become much more famous. The first and foremost is that unlike in the movies, you actually get to experience firsthand what it’s like to be the main character.
With ever-improving graphics and gameplay, the gaming experience has become so surreal and breathtaking that it leaves the user in awe of what lies before their eyes. Games like Uncharted, Assassin’s Creed, Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, and many more have made the gaming experience special. These games provide an experience that no cinematic presentation could ever provide.
Secondly, with ever-improving storylines and plot twists, video games have become more like interactive movies that allow you to play the main character and do anything you want. Video games provide an escape that you just can’t find with movies.
On top of this, video games are available for every set of audiences that you can imagine. From toddlers to 70-year-old grandpas and grandmas, there is a game for everyone. If you’re a sports fan, there is a game for you; from NBA 2k to FIFA to Madden, there is something for everyone. Now this new sector of online gaming, through PC’s, laptops or mobiles isn’t exclusive to just conventional video games, as if you’re someone who likes casino games, Casumo adds new casino games regularly on their website. This new area, commonly called “iGaming” is a new genre for gamers who perhaps aren’t familiar with regular casinos, but still enjoy games or poker or slots, but if you’re more of a traditionalist who is into first-person shooter games, you have an ocean of options to explore.
Video games offer a much broader experience that many people prefer over movies. Mobile games like PUBG, Candy Crush, and other strategy-based games have played a major role in pushing the gaming industry ahead of showbiz.
Furthermore, millions of people have adopted gaming as a full-time profession and make a healthy living out of it, which is also a reason for the rise in popularity of online gaming.
Numbers That Show Why the Gaming Industry Is Bigger Than Showbiz
The gaming industry makes more than films and music combined. The money generated from the global gaming industry is estimated to be in excess of $150 billion, whereas the box office and the music industry amounted to less than $65 billion. These numbers are evidence of the fact that the gaming industry is much bigger than any other avenue you can find in entertainment.
Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic, which wrecked the box office and music industry, spelt gains for the gaming industry. IDC calculated the global gaming revenue for 2020 rose to $180 billion, a rise of 20%, more than the showbiz and North American Sports industry combined. All this proves that people are transitioning more towards the online gaming industry and letting go of movies; it isn’t like movies will not exist anymore; it’s just that they won’t be as big as they were.
For example, before movies became the primary source of entertainment, people used to go to the theatre to watch plays and operas and whatnot. But as soon as a better option came along, people moved on from theatre. The same can be said regarding online gaming and movies; although movies will always be there, online gaming is the future and is already much bigger than the showbiz industry.
