If you’ve had some LiquiFruit 100% apple juice recently, there’s a small chance that you might have also downed some toxic fungi.

A couple of 100% apple juice products have been recalled because of this, which means LiquiFruit probably nipped it in the bud before you did, though.

The decision to recall some of its products came after the apple concentrate supplied to LiquiFruit’s Pioneer Foods was found with elevated levels of a natural toxic substance, called patulin.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says that patulin is a mycotoxin, which is a toxic fungal product produced by a variety of moulds.

Patulin can often be found naturally in rotting apples and apple products and can cause nausea, gastrointestinal disturbances, and vomiting if ingested.

    News24 has more:

The recall is based on the presence of patulin exceeding 50 parts per billion (microgram/kg), which is the regulatory threshold, Pioneer Foods said.

“We have taken the decision, as a precautionary measure and with the interests of our consumers at heart, to launch a recall of products produced from the apple juice concentrate batch in question,” said CEO Tertius Carstens.

The affected LiquiFruit 100% apple juice products sold in South Africa, Botswana, and Namibia include: the LiquiFruit Clear Apple 250ml carton, LiquiFruit Clear Apple 330ml can and 300ml can, as well as the LiquiFruit Clear Apple 1L.

Sure, LiquiFruit has done its due diligence, and you will probably be fine drinking its juice since the dubious products are likely not on the supermarket shelves.

But if you are feeling uneasy, there are always alternatives.
