South Africans are well accustomed to hearing about drive-by shootings.

I could be wrong but I have yet to hear about a jet ski shooting, a technique becoming increasingly popular in the Mexican resort town of Cancun.

In June a pair of assassins pulled up and opened fire at a popular beach, leaving two people dead and one tourist hospitalised with a bullet wound to the shoulder.

That was believed to be the result of a territorial dispute between rival gangs.

At least Tuesday’s gunfire at the four-star Oasis Palm resort didn’t result in any injuries. According to reports, five men wearing military uniforms fired about 20 shots. Below via Sky News:

Lucio Hernández Gutiérrez, the chief of police in the coastal state of Quintana Roo, said the jet skis used by the gunmen have been found and seized.

It is the latest in a number of shooting incidents, as several drug cartels fight for the area’s lucrative drugs trade.

Props to tourist Rick Lebassa for his steely nerves. He told reporters that that wasn’t “overly concerned” because he felt the gunmen were firing into the air.

The gunmen abandoned their jet skis and changed into civilian clothes before fleeing the scene.

Last month, gunmen alleged to be part of the infamous Sinaloa Cartel killed two rival drug dealers at a beach south of Cancun in what has been called a targeted execution.

In Tulum, immensely popular for its Instagrammable locations, two foreigners were killed in a beach shootout in September.

Military presence on beaches in Cancun has now been stepped up:

Because nothing says beach holiday quite like uniformed men with guns at the water’s edge.

The US Department of State has now warned tourists visiting the area to “exercise extreme caution”.
