The Instagram algorithms have me figured out. I’m assuming that’s why the ‘Reels’ section consists almost entirely of cat videos.

Aside from that, it’s mostly nature, sport, and Influencers in the Wild. Do yourself a favour and follow that account – it sums up the dire state of social media (and humanity) in 2022.

To spice things up, there are also a few Cape Town photographers who have built sizeable followings, like Mike Eloff (@lifeofmikeza), Kyle Goetsch (@kyleincpt), Heinrich Knoetze (@instacptguy), and Natassja Zuidmeer (@natassjy).

A shot of Monday’s lunar eclipse and the resultant Super Flower Blood Moon sent me down an Instagram wormhole. I’ve put together a list of Cape Town-based photographers with smaller followings who deserve a shoutout.

That image up top comes via Tyron van der Berg (@reverthex_) who has some cracking shots of Hout Bay:

Yes, there’s Cape Town as well and others from his travels:

Karl Storbeck (@the_photochemist) is responsible for this stunning blood moon shot:

Kyle Feltrim Bennett (@kylefbennett) is primarily a film photographer but no worries, he nailed that blood moon, too:

The fifth photographer worth taking a look at, Taluke Bold (@bold.photography_), is and up and comer and won me over with this great shot of an orange-breasted sunbird:

The species is endemic to the fynbos biome. There’s your useless fact for the day.

Capetonians have plenty to moan about but local photographers can’t say they’ve been dealt a poor hand.

The five accounts above are all men so feel free to drop the names of talented female photographers based in Cape Town in the comments and we can add them.

Welcome to Instagram version 2.0 – more Cape Town, fewer cats.
