Toyota has been crushing it in the South African car market.
As a market leader, the brand has been at the top of the sales charts in the country’s new and used car sales for the past year or so.
The South African Guild of Mobility Journalists (SAGMJ) didn’t have to look too hard to find the winners of the 2022 Car of the Year (COTY) competition.
After a rigorous scoring process, 25 semi-finalists were chosen from 49 vehicles across eight categories competing in this year’s COTY.
The Toyota Corolla Cross was then voted as the overall winner and South African Car of the Year:

The coveted Juror’s Excellence award was given to the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class:

This is apparently quite impressive as it only considers the raw scoring of the expert jurors without automated scoring factors.
The overall winner, on the other hand, includes additional scoring criteria like sales, segment share, and spec-adjusted pricing, reported Top Auto:
“The COTY scoring process is much more than just juror scoring,” said the organisation.
“Once the expert panel concluded scoring, the automated scoring factors that cover sales performance, segment share, and value for money are applied.”
“Every year, we adapt the scoring system slightly to consider new global and local market trends to ensure the credibility and objectivity of our competition.”
The Peugeot 208 won in the motor enthusiasts’ category, which was claimed after the public voted for their favourite vehicle on social media over a period of six weeks:

Per BizCommunity, these are all the category winners for this year’s competition:
Top Auto has prices and specs if you want to do more deep diving.
It’s impressive to see Toyota on top again, even as supply chain issues continue to wreak havoc on stock levels.
