The wheels of the South African Post Office (SAPO) have been slowly rattling off for years now.

The government facility is neck-deep in debt, protest action from fed-up employees, and now, to make the whole situation just that much grimmer, branches across the country are facing a spate of violent crimes.

The South African Postal Workers Union (Sapwu) has revealed that there were 856 violent crimes reported at various post offices across the country, particularly Western Cape, over a 10-month period.

IOL has put together a list of all the hard-hit branches in and around Cape Town that have faced robberies in the last six months, with suspects making off with thousands of rands in cash.

This has exasperated the post office crisis, throwing into light just how under-resourced and neglected the government facilities are:

Sapwu provincial chairperson Mogamat Karriem accused SAPO management of not taking the robberies as seriously as they should.

“There is money allocated for security and so they need to comply with this requirement, but there is no security,” he said.

As a result, staff are left traumatised and having to fend for themselves in the wake of the violence that they are exposed to:

A post office worker – who asked to remain anonymous for fear of victimisation – said their branch had been robbed three times this year.

“We were robbed and there is no support from the company. We had to find our own ways to the doctor and counselling. I had trauma, but other people were shot and harmed in the office. We were robbed twice in one month.

While SAPO figures out how to handle this dire situation, there are ways for you to circumvent the headache of ever dealing with the institution directly.

Especially when goods have to pass through the horrors of customs as they are sent from overseas.

It is safe to say that Postbox Courier will have you sorted. Order goods from anywhere in the world, have them sent to the relevant overseas depot, and they arrive at your front door within three to five working days:

You can track and manage all of your orders via your free account, as well as ship single items or multiple pieces combined into a single shipment.

It’s amazing to note how simple things can be, with items shipped over as a single delivery and delivered directly to you with no problems.

    How about that, SAPO?
