The used car market in South Africa is booming these days.

Aspects like the increasing cost of new cars, as well as stock delays and supply chain issues, have kept the used car market ticking over very nicely.

There’s a slight downside for South Africans looking for their vehicle in the used car market, though.

The increased demand is driving up the average price of used cars, and in extreme cases, used car variants are even a touch more expensive than their new car counterpart.

BusinessTech had a look at how the local used car market has been trading in these conditions, according to AutoTrader’s top 10 most listed used car variants:

Volkswagen makes up the brand with the most number of listings on AutoTrader, with the Volkswagen Polo Vivo Hatch 1.4 Trendline the most popular listing.

While the average price of the Volkswagen Polo Vivo Hatch 1.4 Trendline is R201 584, a brand new one will cost around R235 200.

The Volkswagen Polo Hatch 1.0TSI 70kW Life is one of the vehicles that’ll cost more used than brand new:

It is listed for R353 600 as a brand new car and R404 059 as a used car, which is a R50 000 premium.

That sounds bonkers but there is sound reasoning:

“The Polo is a sought-after model could be seeing a higher average price due to demand. It’s also important to point out that when comparing a new car price to a used car price, to compare car specifications too. You are likely to find more optional extras included in your used car that don’t come standard with a new car,” said George Mienie, CEO of AutoTrader.

Interestingly, the only bakkie in the top 10 is the Ford Ranger 2.2TDCi Double Cab Hi-Rider XL.

The average price of this bakkie is R321 345, where the average year model is 2017, and the average mileage is 107 771 kilometres.

A brand new 2022 Ford Ranger 2.2TDCi Double Cab Hi-Rider XL will cost around R595 000:
