We’re in for a chilly week and weekend ahead.

Best get your gas bottle orders in now.

If you’ve ever wondered how you can work out, with any degree of accuracy, how long your gas will last, then you’re in luck.

Eskom has actually released a PDF that should help with your calculations:

As a basic guideline, gas heaters use approximately 100 grams of gas per panel in one hour, which means that 1kg of gas could provide roughly 10 hours of heating (when one of the three panels is lit).

Crunch the numbers, and you get the following if you’re using a 9kg gas bottle:

  • Single panel burning – 90 hours
  • Double panel burning – 45 hours
  • Triple panel burning – 30 hours

So if you use a single panel for three hours each evening, then you’ll make it about a month before needing a refill.

Triple panel burning seems rather aggressive, but I live in an apartment, not a stately manor, so what do I know?

There is also some information regarding gas usage and cooking appliances:

When it comes to cooking on a gas stove, a 9kg gas bottle will last between three and six months and a 19kg bottle approximately eight months or even a year depending on how frequently the stove is used.

Nothing like Eskom giving you that 6PM to 8:30PM load shedding slot to totally disrupt your dinner plans.
