80-year-old Australian paedophile Anthony Peter Freedendal is still in Cape Town.
He escaped the clutches of the law in his home country, where he had been charged with a slew of child sex crimes in July 2011, and came to South Africa.
Freedendal had been arrested in Port Lincoln, South Australia for the abuse he allegedly committed between June 1999 and January 2003, reported News24.
Among his alleged victims – typically girls and boys between the ages of seven and 11 – was a nine-year-old intellectually disabled girl.
Shortly after his arrest in 2011, Freedendal was released on bail and given permission to visit South Africa on the condition that he return to Australia by November 21, 2011.
He didn’t return to face his 24 child sex crime charges, instead staying in Cape Town to sexually abuse eight of our country’s children instead.
The fugitive pleaded guilty to those charges in 2015 and was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment.
According to the act he was sentenced under – Section 276(1)(i) of the Criminal Procedure Act – he only needed to serve 10 months of the five-year sentence in prison, and the rest under correctional supervision.
Thank goodness Australia intervened at that point, requesting his extradition to face his other charges at home, which meant he was not released to start his period of correctional supervision.
Freedendal has since been trying to remain here (where he is still behind bars), lodging an extradition appeal and using his poor health as an excuse to stay.
But the Australian Central Authority has assured South Africa that their prison health system is top-notch and that Freedendal will be looked after.
If it is decided that he can stay in South Africa, he might be able to walk free sooner than if he is returned to Australia.
IOL notes how the Australian paedophile has been married for 51 years and has three children as well as five grandchildren.
