The universe may be ever-expanding and infinite and all of that (our thanks to the James Webb Space Telescope for the unreal visuals), but the internet is a beast unto its own.
Remember the old days when your boss emailed you a link to a viral video and Janet from accounts hit ‘Reply All’ and the video wasn’t even funny but now you feel obliged to weigh in because it was from your boss?
Simpler times.
Now everything ever produced is available at our fingertips and anybody hitting ‘Reply All’ is flogged and publicly shamed, as it should be.
So anyway, Ozzie comedian Lou Wall was asked by The Guardian to share the 10 funniest things she has ever seen on the internet.
We’ve chiselled that down to five, starting with ‘How Animals Eat Their Food’:
140 million views and counting.
Wall says the video was released on her 16th birthday and she walked around school insisting everybody watch “the funniest video ever”. Props for sticking to her guns more than nine years later.
Shall we have a chuckle at some Flat Earthers? Yes, let’s do that:
Wall says:
My dream is to one day own a pizzeria called Flat Earth Pizza’s just for the demographic of customers it would attract and the wild conversations I would have. For now I will make do with this report from a flat earthers’ conference – bonus points for the freestyle rap.
We also awarded bonus points for the freestyle rap. Great minds think alike.
For our third pick from Wall’s list, we pivot from video to a Facebook Marketplace listing posted to the Reddit thread, r/ScottishPeopleTwitter:
I’m almost certain this is a pisstake and Photoshop job but I respect the effort.
Comedian James Acaster is the star of the show in our fourth selection. Appearing on The Great Stand Up To Cancer Bake Off, the deadpan Brit managed to totally botch his effort:
Wall said:
In lockdown one I decided that I should make gnocchi from scratch and, let me tell you, they came out so wet and hard the only accurate description I can give you is that they tasted like “river rocks”.
Anyway, this video makes my kitchen nightmare look like Attica. I’m pretty sure I contracted food poisoning simply viewing this but comedian James Acaster struggling through a string of mental breakdowns while attempting to make flapjacks will never not be iconic.
I’d like to chime in here with a somewhat food-related classic from days of old.
Take a bow, Paul Charles Dozsa, who was later identified as serial petty criminal Cecil George Edward:
Right, let’s wrap this up with a nod to TikTok, a corner of the internet I don’t go near but am constantly reminded of.
In this case, I’m glad I did because the man behind this account does what he does very well:
@lubalin that escalated quickly… #sodramatic #humor #oldpeoplefacebook #boomer #musician #producer ♬ original sound – Lubalin
Facebook Marketplace, hey – the gift that keeps on giving. Wall agrees:
Lubalin has taken this real-life internet interaction and turned it into a musical comedy masterpiece. The beats, the plot development, the twist!? I’m declaring musical comedy funny again.
Happy days.
When it’s not aiding in undermining democracy and sowing misinformation of many varieties, the internet can be a lot of fun.
