A matric dance is a big milestone for many students across South Africa.
What should be a moment that marks the end of one’s school life has quickly become an opportunity for teenagers to try and outdo each other with the most lavish and over-the-top entrances.
In 2018, a couple arrived at their matric farewell in a police Nyala vehicle, escorted by six public order police officers in order to stand out. Then, in 2019, a lady showed off her family’s wealth with a video that seemed fit for MTV Cribs or My Super Sweet 16.
Someone this year clearly didn’t heed the cringe warning. She arrived in a coffin, lying down like a very well-dressed dead person.
Exotic cars, horse-drawn carriages, helicopters, and even Pick ‘n Pay trollies (yes, someone rocked up to the Danville Girls High matric jol in a blinged-out trolley in August) are so done and dusted, clearly.
Perhaps this pupil was trying to symbolise a rebirth after school, or maybe she’s a fan of the gothic Addam’s Family horror-glam.
Either way, folks on social media are positively shocked. Per Briefly, @LebogangNM posted two images of the death-defying matric student arriving at her ball in a coffin a few Saturdays back:
The name of the student and her school have not been mentioned.
Per The Daily Voice, someone commented that “the world is really coming to an end”. Another quipped, “What is this… has it gotten to the stage of coming out of a coffin. This is Miss undertaker”.
