For me, a car is like a pair of takkies.
I won’t spend a small fortune on them because they’re meant to get used, scuffed, and heavily dusted.
That’s why when I get a ding on my car (a humble Chevy Spark), I shrug my shoulders and think, well, that’s what happens when you go from A to B sometimes.
I can only shake my head at okes who drive around in supercars that cost more than a house. Trees, pavements, and other cars are basically waiting on the sidelines for the opportunity to make contact with the expensive piece of engineering.
The Atlantic Seaboard, and particularly the lovely stretch of road from Green Point to Camps Bay, seems to be supercar crash heaven.
Sea Point ward councillor Nicola Jowell even had to bolster traffic enforcement in Sea Point, which is a bit of a hotspot for illegal street racing in Cape Town.
You may have noticed the area has a couple of newly-minted speed cameras along the main roads “to help combat speedsters and illegal street racers in the area”.
But despite this, supercars be crashing.
Cape Town ETC reported on a viral video of a Ferrari 458 and an Audi R8 colliding in Sea Point on Saturday morning, which might just be the most expensive car crash in the area since it involves not one but two supercars:
The expensive accident happened around 11am in Beach Road, leaving both the front side of the Ferrari and rear of the Audi badly damaged.
…While it is yet to be confirmed, it is believed that one of the drivers was tech entrepreneur, JP van der Spuy, who was photographed speaking to law enforcement at the scene of the accident, adjacent to the Sea Point Promenade.
Apparently, the combined value of the high-performance vehicles is estimated at over R8 million.
The cause of the accident is not confirmed, but when you have money to buy an R4 million luxury car, you can probably afford to skirt the speed cameras:
