Do you like pina colada?

Look, I saw the cocktail name, and I now can’t stop singing the song (you know the one) with various voice affectations, so I thought it was only fair that you got the earworm, too.

To make up for it, though, there’s a really excellent Pina Colada recipe that we will share with you. Along with those other rum cocktail classics, Caipirinhas and Mojitos.

Since all of us here at 2oceansvibe have officially declared Summer open, we are getting ready for the sun, sea, and sipping.

That means kicking off our flops as soon as we hit the beach, and immediately sipping icy cocktails with premium liquor while we listen to the waves crash and smell the Vaalies sizzle. Ag sorry man, I meant the vleis.

We reckon rum cocktails will be a smash hit this summer, and not just because they are typically loaded with ice, but also because there’s a mysterious dark rum that ought to be sampled.

Say hello to the mystical one, the Elephantom Rum, which honours the legend of a bull elephant from the Knysna Forest who was famously known to appear and then magically disappear.

The dark and mysterious rum is triple distilled from pure fermented cane molasses in a copper pot still and aged in bourbon casks, delivering caramel notes to start and finding a rich, rounded, and fruity flavour, full of depth and complexity later on.

Elephantom Rum takes you deep into the folklore of a wild and exotic place and to help you get there, the skilful makers of this tipple, Kinship Spirits, have come up with a few fantastical rum cocktail recipes.

As promised, we’re starting with the Pina Colada.

You’ll need:

  • 50 mililtres Elephantom Rum
  • 40ml coconut milk
  • 100ml pineapple juice
  • 10ml lime juice
  • Two or three dashes of Angostura Bitters

Then:

  • Add all ingredients except Angostura to a cocktail mixer.
  • Shake with ice until cold.
  • Strain into a tiki or highball glass with added ice.
  • Garnish with pineapple leaves, pineapple wedge and Angostura bitters.

Next, you can sample the mysterious spirit via a refreshing Dark Rum Mojito:

A Caipirinha provides a welcome way to try some dark and mysterious rum, and also a cute little drinking game.

Say kai-puh-ree-nyuh five times in a row and if you can’t, take a shot.

You’ll need:

  • 60ml Elephantom Rum
  • Two teaspoons of brown sugar
  • Half a lime cut into four wedges

Then:

  • Squeeze the limes into an Old Fashioned glass,
  • Add sugar and muddle.
  • Fill the glass with lots of ice and add the Elephantom Rum.
  • Stir well and top with soda if you like.
  • Garnish with a lime wedge.

To prepare for summer days and a cocktail haze, grab a bottle or two of the Elephantom Rum from Kinship’s online store.

It’s also drinkable on its own over some ice if you’re not the cocktail sort.

Your summer, your rules.
